Despite a fine performance by center fielder Lou Bayou, the Sacramento Mad Popes lost to the Des Moines Kernels, 7-4. Bayou went 3-4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times. Scott Everard got credit for the save for Des Moines. It was his 16th of the year. The setback makes Sacramento 31-39.

Masakado Matsunaga came through for Des Moines when he hit a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth. With runners on 1st and 2nd, he hit a two-strike slider to center field, staking his team to a 3-2 lead.

"Good, gritty kind of win," said Kernels manager Mel Jenkins.
