Gold Fall Short, 2-1, at Sydney

In a tight game between the Sydney Sharks and the Johannesburg Gold, pitcher Jeff Bannon was terrific on the mound. The Sydney right-hander helped his team to the 2-1 win. Bannon, now 9-9, was the winner. In 6.1 innings, he gave up 3 hits, while striking out 5, walking 3, and allowing no runs. The Sharks, at 40-56, sit in last place in the GBC AfSAmOc Division.
Lúcio Rodríguez had a big solo home run for the Sharks in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Sydney leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a fastball from António Cuartas, who is tied for 3rd in the GBC with a 7.7 K/9 rate, and punished it. The result was his 11th home run of the season, which put the Sharks on top, 2-0.
"When you have a good rhythm and good flow, it's nice to just go out there and pound the strike zone with confidence," said Bannon.
