Kernels Come Back Late, Nip Mad Popes
|
The inspired effort of Sacramento first baseman Chinh Tran-Nhu was not enough to prevent a loss, 8-7, to the Des Moines Kernels. Tran-Nhu was 2-3 with a home run, a double, and a walk. He scored 2 times and drove in 3. Scott Everard snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed no runs on no hits over 2 innings. He's now 5-3 on the season. The third-place Kernels have won 4 in a row.
Des Moines needed the clutch hitting of Ken'ichi Okubo to seal the deal. The left fielder swatted a 2-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Kernels on top, 8-7. For the game, Okubo had 1 home run and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"We believe in ourselves and we're willing to work hard. It's a good combination," Okubo told the Des Moines Daily.
