Surfers Get Past San Fernando, 3-2
The San Fernando Bears could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Morris Chapa into a win. Instead, the Long Beach Surfers prevailed, 3-2. Chapa threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. Frank Geddes, now 2-3, was credited with the win in 0.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on 1 hit, while striking out 1 and walking 2. Quirke Roddis got the save, his 11th in 17 chances.

Long Beach used the timely hitting of Pedro Vargas to seize the win. The left fielder stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Surfers on top, 3-2. It was his only hit in 4 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.

"That's baseball," said San Fernando manager Gonzalo Escobar. "Sometimes the other team plays better than yours."

The victory puts Long Beach at 42-75.
