Black Sox Stymied by Kernels, Akers
|
The Des Moines Kernels went home winners at Vinnie Vitale Stadium, thanks in large part to starter Tommy Akers. Akers stifled the Chicago Black Sox, enabling Des Moines to grab the 6-0 win. With the win, Des Moines raised its record to 71-47.
Akers, a native of DeSoto, Texas, was dealing all game. He kept Chicago hitters off-balance, while giving the Kernels 7.2 quality innings. Akers threw 103 pitches, allowing 4 hits and striking out 11.
"I thought we competed really well," said Kernels manager Mel Jenkins. "I thought the energy was really good."
