Thanks in large part to catcher Armando Medina, the Hawaii Tropics beat the Long Beach Surfers, 9-2. Medina went 2 for 4 with a home run, while scoring 2 times and driving in 2. The win brings the Tropics to 14-5, a promising start as the team looks to return to the playoffs.

The Tropics took the lead in the bottom of the third when Jorge Dodd banged a two-out single. Hawaii had been trailing 1-0, but Dodd hit a first pitch changeup from Héctor Herrera for a 2-run single.

Said losing manager Mike Ellis: "Give the Tropics credit. They played a better game than we did."
