The Hawaii Tropics outlasted Hitoshi Kitamura and the Des Moines Kernels, 8-6. Kitamura was impressive in the loss. The Des Moines third baseman went 2-4 with 2 home runs. He drove in 3 runs and scored twice. The third-place Tropics have won 5 in a row.

Murfreesboro, Tennessee-born Carlos Schumann came through in the clutch. In the bottom of the seventh, with runners on 2nd and 3rd and the Tropics trailing 6-5, he hit a 2-run single to center to put Hawaii on top.

"It was a nice win for our side today," said Tropics manager Rich Kerr. "Not perfect, but we'll take it."
