Bob Johnson had a strong outing for the Long Beach Surfers against the Des Moines Kernels at Kid Krauss's Kum & Go Kourtyard. The right-hander was a big part of his team's 8-3 win. Long Beach is now 22-29, while Des Moines is 26-25.

Long Beach first baseman Gustavo Espinoza contributed a timely at-bat in the top of the third. With two down, he hit a cutter to center field for a run-scoring single. It was his 46th hit of the season and put the Surfers ahead, 1-0.

"The key at this level is throwing strike one," said Johnson. "Successful pitchers do it."
