The Des Moines Kernels defeated the Sacramento Mad Popes, 5-2. Designated Hitter Carlos Rodríguez deserved a large share of the credit. Rodríguez went 2 for 3 with 2 home runs for the Kernels. The 5th-place Kernels are 27-28.

The Kernels got a big at-bat from left fielder Kevin Thistle. For the game, Thistle was 1-4 with a home run, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once. In the bottom of the second, with a runner on 1st, he stroked a 2-run home run. His 2nd home run of the season gave Des Moines a 2-0 lead.

"Carlos is still learning," said Kernels manager Mel Jenkins. "The sky's the limit for him."
