The Louisville Sluggers downed the Des Moines Kernels, 3-1, at Kid Krauss's Kum & Go Kourtyard. Stellar pitching by Tommy Akers had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who finished 2nd in the FL in innings pitched with 211.2 in 2060, handcuffed his opponent all game. Akers, now 6-9, was the winner. In 7.2 innings, he gave up 5 hits, while striking out 4, walking 2, and allowing no runs. With the win, the Sluggers have a record of 63-64.
Ricardo Capeles, who led the FL in triples with 11 last year, had a direct impact on the outcome. Capeles contributed a 2-run triple in the top of the second inning to put Louisville up, 3-0.
"My job is to throw quality pitches, go as deep as I can, and give us an opportunity," said Akers.
