Baseball fans saw a good contest between the Des Moines Kernels and Madison Wolves.
The Des Moines Kernels rode a solid performance from 37-year-old starting pitcher José Barrón to a win, beating the Madison Wolves, 3-2, at Shotz Stadium. Bob Butler was credited with the save, his 11th in 13 tries.
Des Moines used a clutch at-bat from Pedro Gongora to capture the win. The shortstop hammered a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning to put the Kernels ahead, 3-1. It was his lone hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a humdinger.
Des Moines manager Mel Jenkins called it "a good, solid win."
The 4th-place Kernels are 73-61.
